“Report” about the boom in referendums, the return of the KPÖ, church and politics as well as the consequences of the horror house report

On March 26th at 9:05 p.m. on ORF 2; Guest in the studio: KPÖ federal spokesman Tobias Schweiger

Vienna (OTS) Susanne Schnabl will present the “Report” on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 9:05 p.m. on ORF 2 with the following topics:

Boom in referendums

14 referendums were signed in the last registration week alone. The topics are diverse, the initiators are often the same. Critics see the reason for the referendum boom in the reimbursement of costs. It is now a business model. The Greens and ÖVP have therefore announced a reform. However, this requires a constitutional change, i.e. a two-thirds majority in parliament. However, the FPÖ is against lower reimbursement of costs. So will there be any reform before the election? Is there really any truth to the “business model” accusation? And how effective is the direct democratic instrument actually? Laura Franz and Miriam Ressi report.

The return of the KPÖ

In Salzburg, the KPÖ+ will provide the deputy mayor in the future. Even if it wasn’t enough for the mayor’s chair like in Graz, the question arises: Is Austria experiencing a communist renaissance? For the first time in decades, the KPÖ senses the chance to get back into the National Council. How Marxist are the communists in 2024 and how historically burdened is the “KPÖ brand”? A report by Stefan Daubrawa, Julia Ortner and Alexander Sattmann.

Live in the studio: KPÖ federal spokesman Tobias Schweiger

Church and politics

Pope Francis recently caused a stir in an interview in which he urged Ukraine to have the courage to raise a white flag. But what influence does the word of the Catholic leader have on politics and society? The number of people leaving the church increases every year and church services are attended less and less. Even in parliament you can hardly find any professing believers anymore. While it used to be clear which party was voted for by religious people, voting behavior in this group has also become more complex, as has the direction of church involvement in society, report Helga Lazar and Sabina Riedl.

Horror houses – the consequences

Last week, the “Report” revealed how predominantly Syrian refugees were being exploited in several desolate houses in Vienna. Several authorities have since taken action. The City of Vienna held an internal coordination meeting and the tenant assistance department held a meeting for the affected tenants. Is enough already happening? Yilmaz Gülüm and Faris Rahoma asked.
