Shenzhen, China (ots/PRNewswire) – Huawei and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) co-hosted the Tech4Nature Summit 2024 yesterday to mark the start of Phase 2 of the Tech4Nature global partnership and further promote innovation in conservation.
In accordance with the TECH4ALL-Initiative von Huawei and the IUCN Green List Tech4Nature sets an example for the shared vision of both partners to develop technological solutions for protected areas and reserves (PCAs) around the world. It is also the first time that Huawei or the IUCN has entered into a major partnership spanning both the information and communications technology (ICT) and conservation sectors.
“Nature is facing unprecedented challenges, and technology and digital solutions can make a huge contribution to protecting our planet’s biodiversity. That’s why IUCN has launched the Tech4Nature partnership with Huawei,” said Dr. Grethel Aguilar, Director General of IUCN. “I am proud that this partnership is entering the next phase and helping everyone involved work together for the Using nature and creating a better future.”
Tech4Nature Phase 1
Phase 1 of Tech4Nature ran from 2020 to 2023 in five PCAs in China, Mauritius, Mexico, Spain and Switzerland. Key achievements include:
- Acoustic monitoring of the world’s rarest monkey – the Hainan gibbon – to identify individual animals to promote the reintroduction of this critically endangered species. There are currently only 37 of them left.
- AI pattern recognition to identify and track jaguars in Mexico – the Presence of seven animals was confirmed for the first time in Dzilam State Reserve last year.
- Advanced systems for live viewing and monitoring of coral reef conservation and restoration projectscarried out by local communities in Mauritius – 25,000 healthy coral fragments have already been transplanted into damaged reef areas in the Indian Ocean.
“As a technical partner to governments, customers and environmental protection authorities, Huawei is willing to continuously explore environmental and conservation scenarios, develop appropriate digital technologies to address environmental protection challenges, and jointly build an equal and sustainable digital world,” said Tao Jingwen, board member and Chairman of the CSD Committee of Huawei. “Huawei implements four sustainable development strategies and the SHARE concept: To ensure a sustainable digital future (Sustainable), we will work with industry chain partners to create a harmonious and healthy business ecosystem to build (Harmony), increase equality and accessibility through digital inclusion (TECH4ALL) and develop secure and reliable ICT infrastructures and services to protect the digital world (Reliability) Through scientific and technological innovation we can achieve social development together achieve ecological balance (environment).”
Tech4Nature Phase 2
Tech4Nature Phase 2 (2023-2026) will support six flagship projects in China, Mexico, Spain, Brazil, Kenya and Turkey. The summit marked the official launch of these six projects, following Huawei and the IUCN’s launch of Phase 2 in October 2023 announced had.
Phase 2 also represents the IUCN and Huawei’s joint commitment to support the 30×30 target and Goal 4 to prevent extinction, which is in the Global biodiversity framework by Kunming-Montreal (GBF). This phase will also expand collaboration between the technology and conservation sectors by involving more people, partners and countries.
The summit was attended by conservation experts, scientists, representatives from the private sector and government, as well as the broader Tech4Nature community.
The workshops aimed to build capacity among partners, explore action plans for fair and effective protection through the IUCN Green List, discuss ethical considerations and provide guidance for implementation, as well as peer-to-peer learning and sharing.
The partners also have the authoritative Tech4Nature publication Partnership for our Planet published. The publication can be found on the website Tech4Nature can be downloaded and underlines the crucial role that state-of-the-art technological solutions play in overcoming the challenges of modern nature conservation.
