Xinhua Silk Road: Chinese dance drama Wing Chun staged in Paris

The original dance drama Wing Chun from southern China’s Shenzhen was performed at the Palais des Congrès in Paris, France on October 4th.

With three further performances in the following two days, the dance drama received loud applause from the audience at its first performance.

Created and directed by Shenzhen Opera and Dance Theater, the dance drama is based on the national intangible cultural heritage of Wing Chun, a concept-based traditional southern Chinese kung fu style, and Xiangyunsha (Gambiered Canton Gauze). Combining the traditional Chinese martial art Wing Chun with dance, it tells the story of martial arts master Ye Wen’s evolution from Foshan in Guangdong to Hong Kong.

After premiering in Shenzhen in December 2022, the dance drama went on a world tour in cities such as London, Macau and Paris. There have been over 200 performances so far.

The Times praised the dance drama for seamlessly combining dance and martial arts to create an unforgettable cultural experience. Wing Chun also received a high four-star rating from The Guardian.

“Wing Chun not only tells a Chinese story but also showcases Chinese art and resonates with audiences,” commented Farooq Chaudhry, a renowned dance producer.

According to Flora Boumia, a French media official, the dance drama shows the vitality of modern China through traditional Chinese culture and allows audiences to learn about Shenzhen’s deep cultural heritage and aspirations.

“This is an unforgettable performance, with a perfect mix of action, acting and orchestral music,” said a French audience member on the first day of the performance in Paris.

The dance drama will continue its world tour to further promote international cultural exchange and collaboration.

An integral part of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau metropolitan area, Shenzhen is an international high-tech and financial center at the forefront of cultural exchange. Shenzhen has constantly strived to create unique cultural experiences for people around the world, not only through concerts, exhibitions, sporting events and other festival activities in the city, but also by introducing its cultural and tourism products abroad.
