WWF sees steps in the right direction
Vienna/Rome (ots) –

At the end of the 16th World Nature Conference in Rome, the WWF Austria sees steps in the right direction. Among other things, the community of states decided how international funds should be lucrated and distributed in the future for the preservation of biodiversity. In addition, one agreed on a implementation mechanism so that progress can be checked in the future. “These are necessary measures to maintain biological diversity and thus our livelihood. But the agreements must now follow actions ”says WWF expert Joschka Brangs. Overall, the funds provided so far are still under the self -contained destinations of the state community. The WWF therefore demands more global solidarity. Because adequate financing is crucial for an effective implementation of the World Natural Agreement, which is intended to stop and reverse the loss of biological diversity by 2030.

Loss of nature underlines a need for action

How dramatically the loss of nature progresses shows, among other things, the “Living Planet Report”Of the WWF. Accordingly, the globally examined stocks of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fishing have decreased by an average of 73 percent since 1970. There is also a great need for action in Austria: currently over 80 percent of FFH-protected species and habitat types are not in any favorable state of preservation and only 14 percent of the rivers are ecologically intact. In addition, 90 percent of the original moor areas have already been destroyed. The strong soil sealing and settling of the landscape also has a particularly negative effect.
