More than 100 civil society organizations from all over the world demand an immediate ban on further oil and gas explorations in the ocean and the gradual setting of the offshore funding of fossil fuels.

The letter initiated by the International Sea Protection Organization Ocancare calls for measures that are in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement to avert fossil fuels and protect the ocean.

The UN Ocean Conference in June 2025 offers an important opportunity to reconcile decisive protective measures for resistant and healthy sea ecosystems that are suitable for climate protection.
A coalition of 111 environmental organizations of six continents has one today open letter Published that asks governments worldwide to include an obligation to end the search for new oil and gas deposits in the sea floor and to gradually hire existing grants in the final declaration of the third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3). The conference planned for June 2025 in Nice, France, is an important opportunity to advance both marine protection and climate protection measures.
“If we really want to protect the ocean, we have to immediately end the destructive practice of oil and gas searches in the seas,” underlines Nicolas EntrupHead of International Cooperation at OceanCare. “These activities are among the most intensive noise pollution in our seas and have serious or even fatal effects on the sea fauna – from the smallest plankton to large whales. At the same time, the ocean has already absorbed 90 percent of excess heat from carbon emissions, which leads to increasing sea levels, melting ice and increasing marine heat waves. Exhaust that protects us from the worst effects of climate change.
“This open letter is a call to the coherence between climate and marine policy. We cannot cope with the climate emergency without protecting the ocean, and we cannot save sea ecosystems without setting the oil and gas hunt with sound cannons and ending fossil fuels,” according to entrup.
The diverse coalition-including marine protection organizations, air conditioning law groups and environmental NGOs from the global north and south-emphasizes that the further search for new fossil resources is incompatible with the goals of the Paris Agreement and the protection of the sea ecosystems.
The letter emphasizes that Dollarmilliarden continues to invest in the search for oil and gas in the sea floor, even in protected areas, despite scientific evidence that indicate the urgent need to stop the development of new fossil fuels. The search for new deposits includes seismic studies with powerful sound cannons that are among the loudest noise sources in the ocean generated by humans and cause far -reaching damage to the sea fauna across entire food networks.
“The European seas are particularly susceptible to both climate effects and for direct damage caused by oil and gas searches,” adds Carlos BravoMarine policy expert at OceanCare. “The European governments therefore have a special responsibility to take on a leadership role in this topic. France, Spain and Portugal have already banned the exploration of new oil and gas deposits in their waters, while some other EU member states such as Denmark have taken serious steps to restrict them. to let fossil fuels expire.
The joint call from civil society is part of wider efforts to ensure that the UNOC3 becomes a turning point for both marine protection and climate protection.

background
Die Third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) will take place in June 2025 in Nice, France. The high -ranking conference jointly organized by France and Costa Rica focuses on the accelerated implementation of the goal for sustainable development 14 (life under water). The UNOC3 offers a crucial opportunity for governments to commit to concrete measures for marine protection and to address the interconnected crises of climate change, the loss of biodiversity and pollution.
Die Initiative von OceanCare „Because Our Planet Is Blue“Ask six concrete measures to protect the ocean, including the first requirement to prohibit the offshore exploration of oil and gas and gradually setting the existing support of fossil fuels. The campaign emphasizes that despite the goals of the Paris Agreement, dollarillions for the search for oil and gas in the sea floor are still being issued.
