World Dog Day: Rosi’s family is waiting for loving dog fans – blatant lack of space in animal shelters

Upper Austria/Salzburg (OTS) –

On World Dog Day on October 10th, the Pfotenhilfe association draws attention to the fact that there is always a massive shortage of dog places in animal shelters. In addition to the Braunau district, the Pfotenhilfe animal shelter has to cover three districts in Upper Austria and Salzburg where there are no animal shelters or at least no dog places. In Upper Austria there are also fears that the situation will worsen due to the much stricter new dog ownership law, which comes into force on December 1st. To accommodate dangerous dogs, additional rescue stations with safe housing facilities and specially trained trainers would be needed. However, corresponding measures have apparently not been implemented since the law was passed.

Non-violent education and socialization is the top priority

Dogs are not born dangerous, only humans can cause that. Non-violent training and socialization with other dogs are essential. Unfortunately, even in 2024, this cannot be said to be a given for many trainers and dog schools. And another grievance is that such trainers and dog schools are even allowed to hold mandatory specialist courses and are therefore allowed to disseminate their dangerous and animal welfare-contrary views in a highly official manner. Unfortunately, anyone can call themselves a dog trainer without any training criteria. But violence always creates frustration and at some point counter-violence when the dog sees his chance. And the public only sees the tip of the iceberg of biting incidents.

Be sure to give priority to dogs from animal shelters!

You have to make a conscious and well-considered decision about a new family member. Spontaneous purchases from breeders should be rejected for animal welfare reasons. This often puts additional strain on animal shelters after a short period of time because the puppy does not meet expectations, does not “work”, wets the carpet or destroys the furnishings. Dogs from animal welfare should always be given a chance and priority should always be given, because far too many of them are eagerly waiting to be reunited with their families and sometimes in suboptimal conditions due to a lack of space. Puppies and young dogs are also often obtained from animal welfare, for example when pregnant mothers or entire families are given away or confiscated from illegal breeding. Rosi and her children are currently waiting for loving places at the Pfotenhilfe animal shelter. But older and not “perfect” dogs also deserve a chance. They are often particularly grateful and affectionate.
