WKÖ- Kopf welcomes the vote in the EU Parliament to postpone the EU deforestation regulation, but massive burdens are looming
Vienna (OTS) –

“The vote in the EU Parliament to postpone the implementation deadline of the EU Deforestation Regulation to December 31, 2025 is an important step to prevent short-term chaos scenarios in the supply chains and to better clarify open questions about implementation,” explains Karlheinz Kopf , Secretary General of the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKÖ). However, a final agreement between the Council and Parliament is now needed quickly. “In order for companies to have security, the trilogue negotiations must now start as soon as possible in order to adopt the postponement in good time before the end of the year,” demands Kopf.

The WKÖ supports the regulation’s goals of minimizing global deforestation. But the current design is not practical and leads to excessive bureaucracy, which puts a disproportionate burden on the domestic economy and its value chain from agriculture to industry. “We need adjustments to ensure the competitiveness of our companies and to avoid unnecessary increases in the price of domestic products. The European legislator is required to revise these points in the spirit of practical practice,” said Kopf.

We must learn from this warning example. The WKÖ is therefore calling for an early and practical design as part of the implementation of the EU Supply Chain Directive (CSDDD). It is particularly important to quickly publish the announced accompanying measures such as guidelines and model contractual clauses in order to give companies planning and legal certainty. “If this is not possible, a postponement of the EU Supply Chain Directive will ultimately be unavoidable,” concludes Kopf.
