WKÖ-Klacska: “Austrian freight forwarders must not become a bargaining chip in the Schengen dispute”

Dozens of domestic transporters are stuck at the Bulgarian border due to rigorous customs controls – the industry appeals to the government

Vienna (OTS) “Dozens of Austrian freight trucks are stuck at the Bulgarian border, some of them for three days, while trucks with other license plates are not subject to such rigorous customs controls. It seems as if our industry has to bear the burden of the Schengen dispute,” criticizes Alexander Klacska, chairman of the federal transport and traffic division in the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKÖ). He therefore appeals not only to Bulgaria to stop the harassing customs controls, but also to the Austrian federal government.

The opening of air traffic with Bulgaria and Romania could only have been a first step. “In the interests of Austrian companies, it would be desirable to completely stop the blockade regarding the two countries’ accession to Schengen. Ultimately, not only the transport industry but the entire Austrian economy would benefit from the free movement of goods,” said Klacska. (PWK007/DFS)
