Teaching is on the rise in Vienna. At the end of September, the Viennese companies were training around 15,500 apprentices. An increase of more than three percent compared to the same period last year and 2,000 more apprentices than in August. A third of the apprentices started their training in September.
“After there was a very strong increase in the number of apprentices last year, this positive trend is continuing this year. There are more apprentices in Vienna and also more companies that train them. The best way to combat the shortage of skilled workers is to recruit them yourself. Viennese companies know this. The apprenticeship is also an excellent basis for a successful professional life – including setting up your own company. And an apprenticeship qualification is de facto a job guarantee,” says Walter Ruck, President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce.
100 apprenticeships modernized
Apprenticeship is a training model that is constantly being developed further in line with a changing economic world. Ruck: “Digitalization has changed the professional world in practically all areas. There are also new techniques and working methods. The teaching must remain up-to-date. We are constantly working on this. In recent years we have created two dozen new apprenticeships and modernized more than 100. Teaching is more attractive today than ever before.”

Apprenticeships must also become more attractive for adults – especially financially. “We are therefore proposing a scholarship model for adult apprentices that is intended to compensate for financial losses,” says Ruck. In order to make teaching even more attractive, an apprenticeship qualification should qualify you to study in the relevant subject area. At the same time, career orientation needs to be increased from the 5th grade onwards and the basic qualifications also need to be worked on.
