WIFO study shows clearly: Upper Austria is in last place when it comes to measures against inflation

Linz (OTS) The gap between the federal states when it comes to anti-inflation measures varies greatly: Upper Austrians receive 200 euros less compared to the average of all federal states. This is the result of a current WIFO study. “We expect that the state of Upper Austria will immediately present a plan on how to deal with the long-term consequences of inflation. These include measures in the area of housing and additional funds for social housing“, demands AK President Andreas Stangl.

The anti-inflation measures varied greatly depending on the federal state. This is confirmed by a current WIFO study entitled “Inflation and budgets of the federal states in Austria”.

Upper Austria only spent 1.8 million euros (in the period from 2022 to 2024). Across all federal states it was around 1.8 billion. Vienna was the front runner with almost 738 million euros. Even small Burgenland spent almost 49 million euros, almost 30 times as much as Upper Austria.

When viewed per capita, a similarly drastic picture emerges (see graphic): with a ridiculous 1.2 euros per capita, Upper Austria is far behind in last place of all federal states. Styria occupies the second worst place with 90 euros per capita. On average, 201.3 euros were invested per capita in all federal states. The leader among the federal states is Vienna with over 370 euros per capita.

According to WIFO, the adjusted anti-inflation measures of the federal states are covered on average to almost 37 percent by the federal government’s special grants to the federal states for housing and heating cost subsidies (675 million). These were distributed among the countries according to population key. The share that Upper Austria received is far above the actual anti-inflation measures in Upper Austria.

For years we have been pointing out that measures must finally be taken that resonate with people. The state government should explain to its citizens why they were treated worse than the rest of Austria during the price increase?“, says AK President Andreas Stangl.

Measures in the area of housing are urgently needed
In addition, as the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor, we expect the state to immediately present a plan on how the long-term consequences of inflation can be contained and mitigated. These include, above all, measures in the area of housing, such as a reform of housing allowances and additional funds for social housing. But something also has to happen in the area of community finances. Because the communities were also neglected by the state. In general, there needs to be more transparency in the state budget“, said the AK President.
