Don’t feel like going to the pedals too firmly? The Viennese lines remember. They temporarily complement the Wienmobil bike offer with e-bikes. Initiated by Nextbike, around 300 are now on the road all over Vienna – in addition to the 3,000 existing rental bikes. From July 2025 to October 2026, bike enthusiasts have the opportunity to test the e-bikes. The feedback from customers is then processed and the pilot project is evaluated. The e-bikes can be seen and bookable in the Nextbike app from Monday, July 7, 2025. The e-bikes are marked by a “flash” symbol.
Public City Councilor Ulli Sima: “Especially in a city like Vienna that has settled ambitious climate goals, modern, sustainable sharing offers are indispensable. Cycling is becoming increasingly popular in the city, as the Modal Split shows -11 % of Viennese are already covering their everyday ways. Infrastructure, this year, around 20 km of new cycle paths will be added in the main pathway alone.
Comfortably borrow on 250 Wienmobil bike stations
As usual, the e-bikes can be loaned and returned at the Wienmobil stations. Simply download NextBike app, find e-bike nearby, scan QR code, book and cycle!
Battery is installed in the wheels, the operator NextBike takes care of the load, service and maintenance of the bikes. In terms of color, the e-bikes stand out from the usual white-red Wienmobil bikes: the e-bikes are recognizable by their silver-gray frame, the battery and they are also marked with a flash on the rear wheel cancellation.
An e-bike costs three euros per 30 minutes, the maximum daily price is 36 euros. The use of the e-bikes is not included in the Wienmobil Rad annual subscription. However, there is a special goodyia for all Wiener-Linien-Stammkund and climaticket owners who already use Wienmobil Rad: two free trips of 30 minutes are automatically stored in the user account-exclusively for the e-bikes. Nextbike takes over the investment and operating costs.
“I am pleased about the expansion of our Wienmobil cycling offer around e-bikes. We offer an even more attractive sharing offer-especially for people who want to conveniently overcome longer distances or differences in height in Vienna. The e-bikes are an ideal addition to the subway, BIM, BIM, BUS and our Wienmobil-and promote environmentally friendly locomotion,” says Wiener Linien-Buerriner Alexandra Reinagl.
Stand with Wienmobil Rad (R) for the climate
Wienmobil bikes not only contribute to health, but also do something good for the environment. In the forgotten year alone, the Wienmobil bikes were loaned almost a million times. If you had driven the same kilometers by car, you would have been expelled 514 tons of CO2 equivalents.
Fortunately, the proportion of cyclists in Vienna is constantly increasing. At Modal Split, i.e. the survey, how the Viennese cover their daily paths, cycling has again increased by one percentage point compared to the previous year and comes to 11 percent. 34 % do their daily paths with the publications, closely followed by walking too-foot at around 30 %. The Viennese thus cover more than three quarters of their ways in an environmentally and climate-friendly manner.
Marco Weigert, Nextbike Director Dach looks forward to the project: “We look forward to bringing this pilot project on the streets together with the Vienna lines and thus expanding the successful Wienmobil bike with comfortable e-bikes. Especially in Vienna, where sustainable traffic concepts are very important, we want to offer people an even more attractive public experience through modern technologies.”
The Bikesharing service of the Viennese lines has been available since April 1, 2022. Over 3,000 bikes at more than 250 locations can be loaned throughout Vienna. The bikesharing offer is available in all 23 districts and is also used temporarily at events. Part of the cycling fleet has a child seat so that small children can also ride. www.wienmobilrad.at
