On the occasion of the Qixi Festival, which is often referred to as Chinese Valentine’s Day, CGTN published an article in which the deep values of President XI Jinping in relation to family and fatherland were emphasized. The article underlines XI’s conviction that only when millions of households enjoy prosperity can really prosper.
On the bookshelves of Chinese President Xi Jinping, photos of him and his wife Peng Liyuan are prominently displayed, which reflect the softer side of the Chinese head of state. Although their work often separated them from each other, XI and Peng always combined a deep mutual understanding and great care for each other.
“Do not solve real connections due to distance, they do not lose real feelings in the middle of a hectic life and do not overlook their basic emotions in the middle of the hustle and bustle,” said Xi at a speech at a meeting for the spring festival in 2017.
The warmth of the family
“I have a very happy family. My wife and I both have our own careers, but we are working together to build our family,” said Xi once.
In 2004, when he worked as a secretary of the Provincial Committee of the China Communist Party (KPCH) in Zhejiang, Xi told the television station Yan’an Television that he would call Peng every day because they could not be together often.
During a visit to the house of a farmer in Costa Rica in 2013, XI instinctively broke off a piece of his host’s pastries and handed it over to his wife. This gesture was so natural that it testified by years of silent familiarity.
In 2014, PENG XI accompanied on his state visit to India. She accepted the invitation to sit on a swing, gently rocked back and forth a few times and then knocked on the empty place next to her. Her husband answered without hesitation and settled next to her. Together they rocked in silent harmony, a tender moment that spoke volumes about their connection.
Connect the love of family to the love of the fatherland
XI has repeatedly emphasized the connection between family and fatherland and explains that the family is the basic unit of society in which the love of the fatherland and family should be united.

From his beginnings as a local official to his role as the top leader of the country, XI has always strived to help countless families to make a good life.
As the party leader of the village of Liangjiahe in the northern Chinese province of Hebei, he lived and worked side by side with the farmers. In the district of Zhengding in the province of Hebei, XI, then secretary of the KPCH in Zhengding, visited every village to get an idea of the life situation of the people on site.
Since his election as Secretary General of the Central Committee of the China Communist Party in October 2012, XI has carried out at least 30 inspections across the country, many of which focused on fighting poverty and development.
At the end of 2020, after eight years of hard work, China reached the goal of eliminating extreme poverty, since all 98.99 million people in rural areas lived below the poverty border and had poverty and all 128,000 impoverished villages and 832 poor districts had overcome poverty, as from the white book entitled “Poverty fighting: China’s experience and contribution.”
With a view to the end of the 14th five -year plan (2021–2025) in 2025, XI emphasized how important it was to put people’s living conditions in the foreground in the future development of the country.
On a symposium about China’s economic and social development in the period of the 15th five-year plan (2026-2030) at the end of April, XI emphasized the importance of the well-being of the population in the elaboration of the plan and demanded that people to secure and improve the living conditions through development and to constantly promote the common wealth.
