When robots pull weeds – artificial intelligence on the farm

TV magazine “Land and People” on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. on ORF 2

St. Pölten (OTS) A “Land and People” report in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria shows what artificial intelligence looks like in the field and in crop cultivation: a field robot independently grows hemp, then coriander in the next field. In the next few weeks he will also be taking over the weeding here. A drone flies over the neighboring field. With the help of the photos it provides, the farmer controls the development of the crops grown. What sounds like a vision of the future is already reality. At “Waldland” in Friedersbach, for example, they are already fully committed to digitalization and artificial intelligence and are also in intensive contact with the Innovation Farm Mold in Horn. Here, the Lower Austrian Chamber of Agriculture is currently researching and improving the detection of poisonous plants using drones. In about one to two years, companies all over Austria should be able to declare war on poisonous plants in their fields.

Further topics from “Land and People” on May 18th:

* Top of the line quality
With the vineyard classification, which was enshrined in law in 2023, a further stage has now been created for tested Austrian quality wines. Using the Kremstal as an example, we show which quality characteristics characterize a Rieden wine.

* The young wild
The agricultural businesses of the future have to dare – that is the credo of 15 young vegetable farmers from Styria. They market their vegetables together, help process them together and create new things.

* Steyrtalbahn cultural asset
Austria’s oldest narrow-gauge railway, the Steyrtalbahn, is still in use as a museum railway. The 17 km long route from Steyr to Grünburg leads past the world-famous Christkindl pilgrimage church and through the wildly romantic meadow landscape.

* Costume and skid jumping
In Thörl in Carinthia, in the private museum of a traditional costume tailor, we learn about the tradition of this craft, but also the connection between traditional costume and skid cutting, a custom at Pentecost.
