In Israel’s war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, more than 32,000 people have been killed, more than 75,000 people have been injured and more than a million people are homeless. Large parts of the Gaza Strip are in ruins and there is a lack of food, drinking water and medicine. Criticism of Israel’s actions after the Hamas massacre on October 7th is increasing, including in the country itself. In the “WELTjournal” high-ranking representatives from Israel’s politics, military and secret service have their say: former Prime Minister Ehud Barak, the former Foreign and Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, Cabinet Minister Avi Töpfer, former army commander Jehuda Shaul and the long-time head of the Israeli domestic intelligence service Shin Bet Ami Ayalon. She and others answer questions from Australian reporter John Lyons and paint a nuanced picture of Israel’s highly controversial strategy in the fight against Hamas.

Since the Hamas massacre on October 7th, in which more than 1,200 people were killed, nothing has been the same in Israel. People are afraid: Jews are afraid of their Palestinian neighbors, many openly carry machine guns with them when shopping or in restaurants. Israeli Palestinians fear attacks and disenfranchisement. Thousands of Israelis take to the streets every day – against Prime Minister Netanyahu and his ultra-right government, for the freeing of the hostages, for more or less violence, for or against the Gaza war. The “WELTjournal +” shows how the views on all sides are becoming more extreme and there is hardly any room for moderate opinions.
