Vienna (OTS) – Almost 20,000 Ukrainian children have been trafficked to Russia since the war began. According to Kiev, this number is based on UN information. The “WELTjournal” will show the report “The Abducted Children of Ukraine” on ORF 2 on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at 10:30 p.m. The documentary “The Mine Clearers” follows in “WELTjournal +” at 11:05 p.m.
WELTjournal: “The abducted children of Ukraine”
Ukraine accuses Russia of systematically deporting and relocating Ukrainian children as part of Russia’s war policy to destroy their identity. The “WELTjournal” shows the fate of some of these children who were sent to holiday camps in Russia from the conquered Ukrainian territories and have not been able to return to this day. Many are now estranged from their families and their homeland. So far only a few parents have managed to get their children back. Moscow refuses to provide Ukraine and international organizations with information about the whereabouts of the children.
WELTjournal +: “The mine clearers”
They often look harmless – and yet they are a deadly danger. Unexploded remnants of war, mines and booby traps pose a great danger in many regions of Ukraine. Exact figures on how many civilian casualties there have been due to mines since Russia’s war of aggression are not available. “WELTjournal +” accompanies women in Ukraine who work as deminers. Olena and Tetiana drive through the affected areas with their teams, looking for clues and also interviewing witnesses on site. Risking their lives, they clean streets and important infrastructure points of explosive remnants. The fate of 23-year-old nurse Oksana shows how important the work of deminers is. She lost both legs in a mine explosion on the way home. She is currently in Hamburg for treatment and is working on learning to walk again with the help of prostheses.
