Vienna (OTS) The “WELTjournal” will show the report “End of Privacy – Our Data on the Internet” on ORF 2 on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at 10:30 p.m. The documentary “Your face belongs to us – dangers of facial recognition” follows in “WELTjournal +” at 11:05 p.m.:

WELTjournal: “End of privacy – our data on the internet”

Internet, cell phones and computers have become an integral part of our lives. We use them constantly at work and in our private lives – and often worry that authorities, banks, insurance companies and service providers demand too much data from us. But on social media and when we search and surf, we voluntarily give away lots of private details about ourselves – and allow large private companies in the US to create detailed personality profiles of us. These corporations know much more about us than we realize. They can predict future actions and thereby influence our decisions – from online shopping to political elections.
The Swiss journalist Reto Caduff asked himself whether it is even possible to protect yourself and maintain a minimum level of control over your own data online. In this “WELTjournal” he comes to the conclusion that we as individuals, but also as a society, need to think much more about how we want to deal with this total loss of privacy.

WELTjournal +: “Your face belongs to us – dangers of facial recognition”

Facial recognition programs are becoming more and more sophisticated and increasingly intruding on our privacy. New York-based technology company Clearview AI is working to identify the face of every person on the planet. Around 100 billion images are collected, most of them taken without the knowledge or consent of the owner from social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn – in Europe, contrary to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. Clearview AI is considered the world’s second most accurate facial recognition platform, after that of the Chinese Communist Party, enabling real-time mass surveillance to control the population and suppress dissent. Clearview AI claims its facial recognition program helps solve crimes, prevent espionage and make the world safer. But his clients include dictatorships in the Middle East, and his ties to the far right, as well as the source of his funding, are raising alarm bells for many. “WELTjournal +” shows the dangers and risks of facial recognition programs: from the total surveillance of the population to the persecution of dissidents, from tracking down undocumented immigrants to identifying demonstrators at protests to serious errors in facial recognition.
