WAM TALK “VIENNA ACTIONISM AND WOMEN” on June 27, 2024

WAM TALK “VIENNA ACTIONISM AND WOMEN” on June 27, 2024

As part of the exhibition “What is Viennese Actionism?” in the Vienna Actionism Museum, the question of the role of women within this radical art movement is repeatedly asked.

Vienna (OTS) The Viennese actionists, who, after transcending and overcoming the panel painting, used (female and male) human bodies as materials in their actions, are often described as anti-feminist from a contemporary perspective. Were the women who made themselves available as models for actions by Günter Brus, Otto Muehl, Hermann Nitsch and Rudolf Schwarzkogler actually passive actors and victims of abuse of power? And were they treated differently than the male actors or models?

In what form did the artists of Viennese Actionism deal with the female body and its functions in their work, or was there a difference to their approach to the male body and if so, what difference?

Statements from participants like Anna Brus, Günter Brus’ wife, paint a more nuanced picture. In addition, Viennese Actionism was repeatedly linked to the work of performers such as Marina Abramović and Florentina Holzinger. Most recently, at the opening of the Vienna Festival, Diana Burkot, representative of the feminist punk collective Pussy Riot, called it important for her work.

The next WAM talk will revolve around this difficult relationship between Viennese Actionism, its representatives and feminist artists who either see themselves inspired or reject Viennese Actionism as anti-feminist.
