“The actions of TCG Unitech and some other companies in Upper Austria are causing huge resentment. Putting pressure on employees who have lost their jobs if they don’t agree to a wage cut is the last resort. No wonder that the mood among the affected employees is bad and the reputation of the company is being massively damaged. “Who wants to work under a management that gives you the choice between wage sacrifice or termination,” says Reinhold Binder, federal chairman of the production union (PRO-GE).
Using TCG Unitech as an example, the union also criticizes the fact that there is no employment guarantee in return for the wage waiver. The management of TCG Unitech speaks loudly about having a long-term perspective in mind in order to justify the approach. But the fact is that waiving wages has never secured a location in the long term. “These are hypocritical arguments. Wage theft like at TCG Unitech or other companies does not solve order problems, does not repair management errors and does not secure the long-term future of a company. Anyone who claims this anyway is either clueless or telling an untruth,” emphasizes Binder, who also points out that in most cases the company management and owners do not waive their high salaries in return: “Preach water, drink wine. That’s what they commonly call it.”
PRO-GE continues to demand that TCG Unitech quickly negotiate and conclude a social plan with the works council. “The disrespectful treatment of employees must stop. On the one hand, there are plans to cut employees, but on the other hand, more than 50 new temporary workers have been taken on. This is management by chaos! This hire-and-fire mentality shows how ruthlessly management and owners act against employees. This will pay off. Nobody will see the company as an attractive employer for a long time. And that applies to all companies that decide on such an approach,” emphasizes Binder.
