VP-Janoch/Mayer: According to the SPÖ district leader, protection against violence is not a district matter

SPÖ district leader does not allow violence protection inquiries and applications

Vienna (OTS) At today’s Meidlinger district council meeting, no inquiries or motions from the opposition parties regarding protection against violence against women were allowed on the agenda. SPÖ district leader Zankl has decided that these issues do not belong on the agenda because protection against violence is not the district’s competence.

“Violence against women has no place in Meidling and throughout Vienna. There is great agreement within the opposition factions that the district must also do its homework when it comes to protection from violence,” says district party chairman and club chairman of the Meidling People’s Party Lorenz Mayer.

“We must address violence against women at all levels and in all generations and carry out targeted prevention work. The fact is: every two minutes a woman in Vienna is affected by violence. The last few weeks in particular have shown how much work still needs to be done when it comes to protection against violence. Prevention work to protect women must also be carried out in Meidling. Violence is an issue that affects all generations and areas of society,” said Meidlinger local councilor Silvia Janoch.

Numerous inquiries to the district leader about violence against women were also not permitted. “Apparently the district leader has no interest in answering questions about protective facilities, self-defense courses and prevention measures in a public meeting. “This is particularly regrettable on the occasion of International Women’s Day today,” concluded Mayer.
