Volkshilfe Vienna welcomes the European housing policy exchange on the initiative of the Mayor of Vienna as an important component for a better European housing policy.
Vienna (OTS) – “Affordable housing is the key to combating poverty in Europe in the long term,” explains Tanja Wehsely, Managing Director of Volkshilfe Wien, during the European dialogue on the topic of affordable housing that took place today in Vienna City Hall.
Wehsely continues: “Rising housing costs are no longer affordable for many people. The creation of a housing competence at the EU Commission is, in our view, very positive. We also welcome the creation of a protective shield against speculation and money laundering
“.
“For decades there has been a rapid increase in for-profit housing construction in Europe,” explains Martin Orner, housing law expert at Volkshilfe. “The social policy instrument must not become a profitable object of speculation.” Vienna is a shining positive example for the whole of Europe.
„We need a paradigm shift at the international, European and national level from the neoliberal profit model to the supply-oriented model of social housing, which must also be accompanied by strong regulation of the real estate markets
says the Volkshilfe housing law expert.
“Housing is a human right,” emphasizes Wehsely in conclusion and welcomes the European housing policy exchange on the initiative of the Mayor of Vienna as an important component for a better European housing policy.
