Violence against women is everyday life in Austria and affects all classes. “Breaking the wave of violence means breaking role models,” says Volkshilfe Wien Wehsely.
Violence against women is a sad everyday occurrence in Austria and is independent of the environment. As long as women do not have the same status in our society, women will be exposed to male violence.

Vienna (OTS) – Cold-blooded murders of five women* within a few hours. They were killed simply because of their gender. Femicides are the final escalation of a spiral of violence that manifests itself in our society every day.
Protection from violence through equality
“The best protection against violence means comprehensive equality,” emphasizes Volkshilfe Wien managing director Tanja Wehsely. “Violence against women is a sad everyday occurrence in Austria and is independent of the environment. As long as women do not have the same status in our society, women will be exposed to male violence.
One in three women alone experience some form of violence because of their gender.
“Breaking the wave of violence against women means breaking with outdated role models,” says Wehsely. Volkshilfe Vienna’s men’s advice service helps men and boys to rethink masculinity.
“Many women* in sex work are exposed to high emotional stress due to the murders,” explains Stefani Doynova, head of SOPHIE – Volkshilfe Vienna’s advice center for sex workers*. SOPHIE is the contact person for all matters related to sex work and supports sex workers in the current crisis with, among other things, relief discussions and professional supervision
