Voglauer/Böker: The worst concrete sins show an urgent need for action in spatial policy
Vienna (OTS) –

“The ‘nine worst concrete sins’ in each federal state chosen by Greenpeace once again demonstrate the craze for concreting in Austria and how ruthlessly valuable soil is being destroyed. One thing is clear: This senseless construction cannot continue if we want to have green meadows, lush forests and fertile fields in this country in the future,” says Olga Voglauer, Secretary General of the Green Party, to the winners of the public voting presented today 400 submissions of Austria’s worst construction sins.
“Austria is the sad European champion in land consumption. And the award-winning examples of failed building policy clearly show how our beautiful nature and valuable livelihoods are being destroyed by ugly concrete sins and failed spatial planning. When will it finally get into the heads of state politics: The people in Austria want real soil protection. Because soil protection means nature and climate protection, flood protection, drinking water protection and ultimately also human protection,” adds Uli Böker, soil protection spokeswoman for the Greens.

Voglauer advocates a new form of building culture in which less concrete is used and vacancies are used: “To do this, the federal states must use the option of vacancy taxes created by the federal government and finally give up their blockade against legally binding soil protection goals. The people in our country also expect this, as several studies have already shown.”

“It is the task of politics to protect and preserve the livelihoods of our children and grandchildren. Doing nothing and continuing to pour concrete as before is not an option. “Austria therefore needs a legally binding soil protection target of 2.5 hectares per day – now,” says Böker.
