Vision Kampwald: A new national park is to be created in the heart of Lower Austria

Schleritzko/Pernkopf/Reichenvater: “A common goal for a special piece of Lower Austria – natural jewel Kampwald as a lighthouse project for nature, tourism and regional development”

St. Pölten (OTS/NLK) The Kampwald and the northern Kamptal are unique natural treasures in Lower Austria, home to ancient giant trees, rare animal species and idyllic recreational areas. In order to preserve these treasures and strengthen the region around the Kampwald, the state of Lower Austria has launched a groundbreaking regional development project. The focus is on protecting biological diversity and the potential for a possible declaration of the area around the Ottenstein estate as a national park.

LH deputy Stephan Pernkopf and Provincial Councilor Ludwig Schleritzko, supported by Markus Reichenvater, the head of Gut Ottenstein, emphasize the potential of the Kampwald: “The Kampwald is a special piece of Lower Austria, with ancient giant trees, cozy lakes and the best local food. Protecting regions, but above all developing them gently, is our common goal! If everyone pulls together, this vision can become reality,” said the representatives of the regional development project in unison. The Windhag Scholarship Foundation demonstrates responsibility when it comes to caring for the preservation of a rich diversity of species and habitats and at the same time emphasizes the importance of the project for tourism.

The idea of a Kampwald National Park symbolizes the ambition to present and preserve Lower Austria’s natural areas. This would open up a new dimension not only for nature lovers and those seeking relaxation, but also for local producers of typical regional products. The national park would further increase the region’s attractiveness and sharpen Lower Austria’s profile as a sustainable and natural destination.

In the first step of the project, funding will be applied to the federal biodiversity fund in the summer in order to bring this project to life and set an example for the preservation of the diverse biotopes. Those involved agree that the Kampwald, as a natural treasure, deserves the best possible attention and protection. Because “the perspective of a national park represents a valuable contribution to the branding of a natural region for living, working and for our guests in the Waldviertel,” conclude Schleritzko and Pernkopf.
