In July, mobility minister Peter Hanke presented the new “Emove Austria” program and thus outlined the future of e-mobility in Austria. A showcase project is the sightseeing provider Big Bus Wien, where the changeover has already started. Ten e-double-dock buses have already been used there every day today, and the entire fleet will be expanded to 16 vehicles by the end of 2025. The switch will save more than 4,000 tons of CO₂ over the next five years. The “Bigbus goes Electric” project was funded by the research funding company (FFG) with around 1.2 million euros from the Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure (BMIMI), financed by the European Union by Nextgenerationeu.

80 million euros: Next funding call for e-buses in September
The focus “Ebus” of the Emove Austria program includes switching to emission -free buses and the expansion of the necessary charging infrastructure. In the upcoming funding call, over 80 million euros will be available from September. 60 percent of the surcharge of an e-bus are funded compared to a conventional vehicle and 60 percent of the costs for charging infrastructure. In June 2025, the proportion of newly approved e-buses in Austria was already around 13 percent. For comparison: With e-cars, the proportion was around 22 percent in the same month.
