Vienna religious hospitals: 220 robotic surgeries in the first year at the Urology Department of the Sisters of Mercy

Vienna (OTS) For a year now, the urology team at the Barmglücke Sisters Hospital in Vienna has been carrying out up to four operations with their new surgical robot system on two operating days per week, while the system is used by the surgeon on the remaining three days. With around 170 procedures out of a total of 220, prostatectomy is the most frequently performed operation in urology. In addition, the department offers the entire spectrum of conservative and surgical treatment procedures, including many on a day-care basis. Particular emphasis is placed on minimally invasive surgical techniques, which, including robotic surgery, are part of the department’s standard repertoire. A new laser for stone therapy and high-performance ultrasound for detailed imaging of the prostate complete the repertoire. “Since we became a specialist clinic specializing in the entire digestive tract, urology, oncology and psychosomatics in 2017, we have been able to treat around 13,400 patients in urology. Our top services include transurethral resection of the prostate and urinary bladder with around 1,500 procedures as well as large-scale robotic tumor surgery. In this way, we are making a significant contribution to urological care in Vienna and are also continuing to work on increasing our operating room utilization,” says Primarius Dr. Wilhelm Bauer. In addition, the surgical robot was used in 329 surgical procedures in its first year at the Barmfühle Sisters Hospital in Vienna, and eight programs such as pancreatic procedures and partial stomach resections were established.

The Viennese religious hospitals also have two surgical robots in the Hospital of the Brothers of Mercy. In the early years, it was mainly patients who were operated on the prostate using surgical robots, but the advantages of the surgical technology have also convinced other disciplines. In addition to urology, diseases of the colon and rectum, gynecological diseases and operations on the pharynx are currently carried out on site.

The seven Vienna religious hospitals

The seven non-profit Vienna religious hospitals include the Barmfühle Brüder Hospital (1020 Vienna), the Franziskus Spital (1030 and 1050 Vienna) and the hospitals of the Vinzenz Group in Vienna (Herz-Jesu Hospital (1030 Vienna), Barmglücke Sisters Hospital Vienna (1060 Vienna) , Orthopedic Hospital Speising (1130 Vienna), St. Josef Hospital (1130 Vienna), Göttlicher Heiland Hospital (1170 Vienna)). Together they have been a reliable, flexible and predictable partner for the City of Vienna for many years. What is characteristic of the houses is the combination of private ownership (religious orders and non-profit companies) with a non-profit mandate to provide care. Financing from the City of Vienna that corresponds to real needs is the essential prerequisite for ensuring that the seven Vienna religious hospitals can continue to make contributions to Vienna’s healthcare in the future.
