Vienna private clinic sets standards in minimally invasive thoracic surgery

Vienna (OTS) The Vienna Private Clinic (WPK) has once again confirmed its leading position as a private institution for innovative and state-of-the-art treatments. The successful performance of the first lung resection with the Da Vinci surgical robot in mid-March marks a significant advance in minimally invasive thoracic surgery.

This milestone underscores our ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence in healthcare, emphasized Prof. Alireza Hoda, a renowned Viennese surgeon in the field of minimally invasive thoracic surgery.

In recent years, the WPK has continuously introduced new surgical techniques and minimally invasive procedures, which underlines its pioneering role in cutting-edge medicine. In addition to the da Vinci surgical robot, the clinic has also invested in endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and VATS (video-assisted thoracoscopy):

  • The Da Vinci Operationsroboter is a sophisticated surgical system that allows doctors to perform complex surgeries with exceptional precision.
  • EBUS (endobronchial ultrasound bronchoscopy) enables precise diagnoses of lung diseases through simultaneous high-resolution endoscopic and sonographic images of the airways, lung tissue and the mediastinum (the area between the lungs). Typically, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) is used to diagnose and stage lung cancer and to examine lymph nodes and mediastinal masses.
  • VATS (video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery) enables minimally invasive, gentle procedures on the chest, lungs and pleura as well as the mediastinum, resulting in faster recovery and fewer complications. This technique is used in various thoracic diseases, including lung cancer and lung metastases. In combination with the indocyanine green fluorescence technology, high-precision surgery can be carried out as part of anatomical segment resections.

The VATS procedures can also be carried out in a less stressful manner in non-intubated patients (NIVATS) under sedoanalgesia (especially in patients who are not fit enough for general anesthesia).

These technologies offer the opportunity to diagnose all lung diseases with precision and provide minimally invasive, personalized surgical treatment.

Over the past three years, we have treated more than 100 patients with this procedure, allowing us to achieve improved accuracy in the diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases, ultimately leading to excellent results and rapid recovery for our patientssays Prof. Hoda, head of the thoracic malignancy working group at the Austrian Society for Surgical Oncology.

These achievements represent significant progress in modern thoracic surgery and underline the WPK’s leading position as an institution for innovative medical interventions.
