From the Kaiserwiese at the Ferris wheel: with classical greats Annette Dasch and Georg Nigl as well as pop star Julian le Play
Vienna (OTS) – Summertime is picnic time! Just in time for the end of school and the start of the holidays in eastern Austria, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra is once again inviting residents and guests of the federal capital to the Kaiserwiese in front of the spectacular backdrop of the Vienna Ferris Wheel for the musical “Vienna Prater Picnic” – a homage to the Danube metropolis, its population and their everyday stories. In doing so, the orchestra traces a musical tradition that attracted countless entertainment seekers from the middle of the 19th century until well into the 20th century. The concert program offers a musical potpourri from operetta and musicals to Viennese songs and pop. In addition to soprano Annette Dasch and baritone Georg Nigl, pop musician Julian le Play, who has won five Amadeus Austrian Music Awards, will also appear on the stage in front of the Ferris wheel together with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under conductor Dirk Kaftan. The open-air concert can be seen live on Friday, June 28, 2024, at 9:20 p.m. on ORF 2 and on ORF ON.
Performances include Johann Strauss’ Czárdás from his only opera “Ritter Pásmán”, Mikis Theodorakis’ legendary “Zorba’s Dance” and Arturo Márquez’ “Danzón No. 2,” whose catchy and popular melody almost became a kind of second Mexican national anthem. Annette Dasch and Georg Nigl also perform duets and arias by Johann Strauss, Sohn, Leo Fall, Robert Stolz and Franz Lehár. And Julian le Play will also delight the audience with selected songs.
The ORF broadcasts the atmospheric opening concert of the Vienna Cultural Summer with eight cameras, and Felix Breisach is responsible for the picture direction. ORF culture presenter Teresa Vogl leads through the humorous music program.
