Milestone for reliable healthcare in Vienna

Vienna (OTS) General Director Evelyn Kölldorfer-Leitgeb, Deputy General Director Herwig Wetzlinger, City Councilor for Health Peter Hacker, City Councilor for Finance Peter Hanke and Wien Holding Managing Director Kurt Gollowitzer presented the new logistics center of the Vienna Health Association at the Port of Vienna at a press conference today.

As the largest healthcare provider in Austria, the Vienna Health Association provides more than three quarters of all hospital services in Vienna. In order to ensure the functionality of the WIGEV facilities on a daily basis, sophisticated supply logistics are necessary. This must provide the required resources on time, in the appropriate quantity and quality and without interruptions to supply.

“After two intensive years of preparation, I am pleased to be able to officially open the new logistics center for the Vienna Health Association. In the three years of the pandemic, the importance of the care function that the Vienna Health Association has for the Viennese population has become particularly clear. A concrete example: Sufficient protective equipment and COVID-19 tests had to be available at all times in all clinics and nursing homes. With the opening of the new central warehouse, it will also be easier to meet short-term, high demand for products in the future.”explains Evelyn Kölldorfer-Leitgeb, General Director of the Vienna Health Association.

The new logistics center uses the most modern technologies. This includes automated inventory tracking systems and data analysis. This makes it possible to precisely predict material requirements and thus minimize waste. “As a central logistics center, the new warehouse significantly improves the security of supply in the Vienna health network. Intelligent systems ensure that material requirements are calculated correctly and that all required materials are always available and optimally distributed. This is of great importance for the employees and patients and an important step in the future health care of the Viennese.”says Health City Councilor Peter Hacker happily.

7000m2 storage space at the port of Vienna

As part of a two-stage procurement process, an area that met the requirements for the central warehouse was found with the Port of Vienna. Every day, goods from 380 roll containers are delivered using 15t trucks. “The challenge was to find a storage area that offers enough space to be able to supply all WIGEV locations in the future. In addition, the economic and sterile goods for the 8 clinics, 9 nursing homes and the Ybbs therapy center of the Vienna Health Association will be stored in almost 7,000 m2 of storage space. By mid-2025, the logistics center will gradually take over supplying all WIGEV clinics and nursing homes with over 32,500 different products. This achieves a sustainable reduction in storage costs.”explains City Councilor for Finance Peter Hanke.

The location at the port of Vienna is initially planned for ten years. The new center includes a pallet and shelving warehouse as well as office space for a total of 55 employees. This includes 4,500 stock items and around 28,000 order items. The warehouse is managed using SAP EWM, which ensures efficient operation. “Modern warehouse management software enables better traceability of goods. A particular advantage is the saving of storage space in some clinics. This is particularly important for our future new buildings. The individual departments will also be relieved by the commissioning of the new logistics center. The volume of traffic in the clinics can be reduced through bundled deliveries.”says Deputy General Director Herwig Wetzlinger happily.

Storage areas the size of 30 football fields

As a subsidiary of Wien Holding, the Port of Vienna is a company of the City of Vienna. With the ports of Freudenau, Albern and the Lobau oil port, it is the largest freight transport center in Eastern Austria. Taken together, all storage areas correspond to an area of around 30 football fields. More than 100 companies have settled on or next to the port area in order to make the best possible use of the port infrastructure.

The logistics center of the Vienna Health Association is now responsible for receiving goods, storing, picking and transporting goods and critical items. Almost half of the 7,000m2 area available to the Vienna Health Association is intended for pallets. The shelved warehouse alone is 1,530m2, and around 350m2 includes office space.

“We are pleased that we were able to win the Vienna Health Association and thus the largest healthcare provider in Austria as a new customer. We are convinced that the storage of economic and sterile goods and thus the bundling of them here on site will bring many advantages for the Vienna Health Association. In this context, it is particularly important to me to emphasize the high importance of security. The entire area is fenced and guarded around the clock.“, says Wien Holding Managing Director Kurt Gollowitzer. Thanks to the new logistics center, processes can now be made more efficient and the bundling of orders enables procurement costs to be reduced.
