Ludwig: “Increase decisive action for the well-being of all Viennese across party lines”
Vienna (OTS/RK) – At a media event today, Thursday, Mayor Michael Ludwig, together with Deputy Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr, non-executive city councilor Karl Mahrer, Vienna Police President Gerhard Pürstl, Federal Police Director Michael Takàcs and Dieter Csefan, federal coordinator of the youth crime task force, mobile offices of the City of Vienna at Reumannplatz and on Keplerplatz presented.
“For me, the topic of security is a very broad area: from social security to keeping crime at bay. “That’s why from now on the city’s departments will be even more present at Reumannplatz in cooperation with the Vienna Police and will be available to address the concerns of the Viennese,” said Ludwig. “We take a close look when we have the impression that measures are necessary and care about respectful coexistence in our city. That was the case in 2018 with the alcohol ban at Praterstern or here in Favoriten with the video surveillance at Reumannplatz or the security zone at Keplerplatz. With the mobile offices we are strengthening these activities.”
According to Mayor Ludwig, the mobile offices would serve as a contact point for citizens and as a meeting point for those departments of the City of Vienna, such as the Office for Emergency Measures, that take part in the control operations. Information can be obtained from the mobile offices and grievances such as not yet known “hot spots” of street crime can be reported. The city boss said he was particularly pleased that the sensitive issue of security was kept out of the “party political wrangling” and that this presentation was taking place together with other parties.
Vice Mayor Wiederkehr drew attention to the fact that security “is one of the most important commandments for all Viennese”. Therefore, in addition to the increased police presence, constant work through prevention and security measures is required. “An important means of combating crime is education and youth work, with which we clearly demand that everyone who lives in Vienna must adhere to the common rules of the game,” said Wiederkehr. The increase in violent crime among the 10 to 14 year old group is worrying, which is why he welcomes the increased measures by the police and the cooperation with the city departments. “We have zero tolerance for any form of crime in public spaces. In order to prevent juvenile crime in advance, we have taken numerous measures, such as setting up the Democracy Department a few weeks ago,” said Wiederkehr.
The police responded “quickly and consistently” by increasing their presence on site, setting up a new task force to combat youth crime and banning weapons on Reumannplatz from Holy Saturday, said ÖVP chairman Mahrer. But now it’s also about addressing the causes. Last week, the People’s Party developed and presented a ten-point action plan to prevent and prevent youth violence. “It has now been agreed with Mayor Michael Ludwig to further develop the proposed measures at expert level and to create a detailed plan for implementation,” said Mahrer.
The City of Vienna’s mobile office at Reumannplatz is temporarily open daily from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. until Friday, April 5th. Furthermore, another mobile office will be set up at Keplerplatz until 5 p.m. today. In addition, two teams will check particularly sensitive points such as parks or locations with poor visibility. In addition to the police, employees from the immediate measures group, the Vienna city service, the waste watchers from municipal departments 42 and 48, the Vienna dog team and social work are involved. Reports received should be forwarded immediately to the mobile control teams and processed. (End) not
