Vienna is a popular travel destination and thanks to the Danube an important hub for European shipping. However, shipping traffic contributes to the CO2 emissions in the urban area. Cabin ships determined in the port are currently causing emissions because they generate electricity on board with diesel generators. These can be avoided from the country by supplying green electricity. That is why Vienna creates the green electricity on the blue Danube by the construction of a country power infrastructure. From the spring of 2026, 100 percent green electricity will flow via a country current station at each of the twelve jetty into the ships that are located at the Vienna shipping center Vienna and the Hafenau Freudenau. Both companies belong to Vienna Holding.
Both the Viennese and the climate benefit from the establishment of a country power infrastructure: emission loads by diesel generators are a thing of the past, residents and passers-by gain better air quality and significant noise reduction. “We go many ways to make Vienna more climate-neutral-on land as well as water. The country power infrastructure benefits ships from clean, climate-friendly electricity if they create in Vienna. Land current for the city climate
Ships not only need electricity for their on -board systems and air conditioning during their trip, but also in the port. As a rule, this is generated with diesel-powered engines and the associated high CO2 emissions and noise. For a better urban climate, Vienna Energie is building a total of six transformer stations that can supply up to 50 ships created at the same time. The test operation starts in autumn 2025. “With the new country power infrastructure, we impressively show how climate protection, quality of life and modern energy solutions go hand in hand instead of diesel generators in Vienna in the future. explains Karl Gruber, managing director of Vienna Energie.
Cabin ships on the Austrian Danube are already benefiting from country power infrastructure, for example in Linz, Melk and Krems. The equipment of the Vienna shipping center and the port of Freudenau is completed the expansion of the country power infrastructure at the large investors in Austria’s Danube federal states. “”Numerous international guests come to Vienna via the Danube.
