Vida union supports SPÖ demand for paid nursing training

vida-Mjka: The federal government is called upon because the health system cannot exist without nursing staff

Vienna (OTS) Gerald Mjka, chairman of the health department in the vida union, supports the SPÖ’s demands that nursing training must be free of charge and that nursing staff should be paid appropriately during their training: “On the one hand, we are desperately looking for staff. On the other hand, at the same time, 400 euros per semester in technical college fees have to be shelled out for training to become a qualified nurse,” says Mjka, calling on the federal government to remove all hurdles to the training of the urgently needed nursing staff in Austria.

In addition, the nursing profession must be made massively more attractive, says Mjka. The aim of all our efforts in the health and care sector must be to attract as many people as possible to care, to provide them with high-quality training and to keep them in the profession with good working conditions. “Unfortunately, nursing staff were not sufficiently taken into account in the health package that has just been implemented in the National Council,” criticizes the vida union.

“The SPÖ’s demand that everyone who completes nursing training should be paid and socially insured during this training and receive the climate ticket for free is therefore absolutely to be supported. Like the police students in training, they should receive 2,300 euros gross per month 14 times a year. That seems appropriate to me,” demands Mjka.

“The federal government must also value training in the health professions. It is time to act quickly, because the health system cannot exist without nurses,” concludes vida unionist Mjka.
