Vice -Chancellor Andreas Babler on the death of Barbara Frischmuth
Vienna (OTS) –

Vice Chancellor and Minister of Culture Andreas Babler expresses great regret about the death of Barbara Frischmuth: “With Barbara Frischmuth, Austrian literature loses a cosmopolitan and empathic author whose literary work is characterized by a special depth and a broad spectrum. My thoughts and my sympathy are with her loved ones in these difficult hours.”

Barbara Frischmuth was born on July 5, 1941 in Altaussee and graduated in Graz in 1959. In Graz, she initially completed an interpreter study for Turkish and Hungarian and subsequently studied orientalistics in Vienna. Their translations and their writer work reflected their love for other cultures, as did their numerous international contacts.

From 1962 Frischmuth belonged to the writer: Inner group around the “Forum Stadtpark” and the magazine “Manuscripts”. With the novel “Die Klosterschule” (1968) she gained awareness in the entire German -speaking world. That was also the beginning of her comprehensive publication activity. Countless awards and honors appreciate your life’s work.

“Frischmuth’s work is a powerful plea for openness, tolerance and the importance of cultural exchange. We say goodbye to a great Austrian who has enriched our society with attitude, courage and literary sensitivity. Their legacy will continue to live in the cultural memory of our country”so Babler.
