VGT on Hannes Royer: Cultured meat and biodiverse wilderness are the greatest hope for the future

Royer argues against cell-cultured meat with supposedly positive effects on farm animals, but because of farm animals on April 7th >30°C and Earth Overshoot Day Austria

An agreement banning the mass keeping of farm animals of all kinds would be in the utmost public interest. Cultured meat can therefore be seen as the greatest hope for the future against animal cruelty and for biodiversity!

GDR. Martin Balluch, VGT chairman

Vienna (OTS) Yesterday, for the first time on April 7th, it was over 30°C in Upper Styria and at the same time it was Earth Overshoot Day for Austria, ie the day on which the earth’s resources available to the Austrian population are exhausted for this year. Both are largely due to livestock farming in Austria, as this drives climate change and wastes resources. But Hannes Royer from the animal industry lobby group “Land Creates Life” argues in one Guest commentary the Kleine Zeitung that meat from cell cultures should not be permitted because otherwise “livestock” farming, which supposedly has such a positive effect on nature, would be abolished. This trend has been observed for some time now, with the meat industry lobby abandoning the ethical and health argument and instead arguing for the use of grassland by ruminants. In addition, VGT chairman DDr. Martin Balluch: “Firstly, meat production in this country is already so perverted that ruminants are no longer fed grass, but mostly corn silage and grain. And secondly, it is downright absurd to portray ruminants in particular with their methane production in the gastrointestinal tract as positive in the amount present, even though methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than CO2.”

And Balluch continues: “The exact opposite of what Royer claims is the case. Meat from cell cultures is the best hope for this, from the unbelievable torture of 93 billion farm animals to be agreed worldwide. Especially in Austria, as Royer claims, we cannot determine what happens to our farm animals. 92% of people are calling for a ban on fully slatted floors with mandatory bedding, but the agricultural lobby is preventing this. Cultured meat would help. And in addition, Royer’s claim that we should enjoy pastures for conservation reasons is misguided. In the Biodiversity strategy Austria has committed itself to placing at least 30% of its nature under effective protection from use. Only nature that is uninfluenced by humans has sufficient resilience to withstand adversities such as invasive species, climate change and natural disasters. “An agreement banning the mass keeping of farm animals of all kinds would be in the utmost public interest. Cultured meat can therefore be seen as the greatest hope for the future against animal cruelty and for biodiversity!
