The state governments are ignoring Minister Gewessler and the federal government in their EU-lawful wolf extermination regulations, now Gewessler should ignore the states!
Vienna (OTS) – When it comes to animals and the environment, Austria is not a constitutional state. The state governments are ignoring both the EU requirements and the criticism from the Environment Ministry and the Federal Chancellery, and are issuing one wolf regulation after the other that violates EU law. Carinthia even goes so far – also in violation of EU law – of passing its own alpine and pasture protection law to exterminate wolves. But it’s not just wolves where the rule of law is in trouble. For example, the legal provisions that every pig is entitled to a physically comfortable lying area and that routine tail docking is prohibited are completely ignored by all authorities and Agriculture Minister Totschnig. Likewise, the provisions in the regulation on pig farming, which allow fully slatted floors, are in diametrical contradiction to the general requirements for animal husbandry in the Animal Welfare Act. The VGT therefore calls on Environment Minister Gewessler not to worry about the state governments and the agriculture minister and to support the renaturation law at EU level.
The law is absolutely necessary to reverse the use-centered view of nature. As a forest owner, the VGT can gain a lot from the idea of renaturation. This is the only way the forest’s important climate impact can develop and the exponentially increasing extinction of species can be stopped. Given the ecological challenges facing humanity, an emergency brake is the only possible course of action.
VGT chairman DDr. Martin Balluch said: “In particular, the ÖVP-led state governments and the FPÖ state councilors ignore the EU requirements of the Fauna-Flora-Habitats Directive at all levels. Be there protected birds shot, you try it Wolf to eradicate, there are no regulations for Natura 2000 protected areas. “Environment Minister Gewessler certainly doesn’t have to follow the opinions of these lawbreakers when it comes to approving the EU’s renaturation law.
Agriculture Minister Totschnig also supported the ban with his blockade stance Fully slatted floor any right to be heard on environmental issues is lost.
You can learn from these people how to create facts without voting. Gewessler should now also act alone and create facts for her part. The vast majority of people in the country would thank her!”
