ORF success for the 85th New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic! The 67th TV broadcast of the brilliant classical music event from the Musikverein, which Maestro Riccardo Muti conducted for the seventh time, was watched by up to 939,000 viewers in Austria alone on January 1, 2025 (provisional weighting). On average, 923,000 music fans enjoyed the (higher reach) second part of the concert, with a market share of 54 percent (12+). The first part of the world-famous classic event, which could be experienced in a total of 93 countries this year, has already reached up to 854,000 with a market share of 55 percent. The interest in the young E12-29 target group was remarkable: the market share for the second part of the concert reached a record 72 percent. Among 12-49 year olds it was 48 percent.
In total, the New Year’s concert matinee on ORF 2 including Dacapo on ORF III reached 1.818 million people (widest circle of viewers), which corresponds to 24 percent of the domestic TV population 12+.
Up to 904,000 people went to see the ORF film during the concert break “2025 – A Strauss Odyssey”, designed by Barbara Weissenbeck, which looked at the musical ruler of the year Johann Strauss Sohn and his work from an unearthly perspective, together with the great-great-grandnephew of the jubilee, Thomas Strauss , and selected ensembles of the Vienna Philharmonic into higher sound spheres. On average, 895,00 people did not want to miss the production with a market share of 56 percent (and 44 and 66 percent of MA in the target groups 12-49 and 12-29, respectively).
More concert dacapos on January 4th on 3sat, on January 6th on ORF 2
Anyone who missed the live TV broadcast of the New Year’s Concert in the morning on January 1st or the main evening service repeat on ORF III can experience the event two more times on television: 3sat presents the top-class classical music event on Saturday, January 4th . January (8:15 p.m.), and ORF 2 will broadcast in the “matinee” on Epiphany, Monday, January 6th (10:00 a.m.). p.m.), a Dacapo – the latter introduced by the so-called intermission film “2025 – A Strauss Odyssey” (9.05 a.m.) and the making-of documentary “Behind the Scenes of the New Year’s Concert” (9.30 a.m.).
Successful online use
The previous online use of the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert was also successful. According to the online moving image measurement (AGTT/GfK TELETEST census), the ORF’s live stream and video-on-demand offering for the 2025 New Year’s Concert on January 1st (parts 1 and 2, break program, Dacapo in ORF III) reached Austria around 92,000 net views (related usage processes), around 319,000 gross views (registered Video starts of a program/post) and a total usage volume of 4.3 million minutes. The concert and the ORF film during the concert break are still available on demand, on ORF ON as part of its own video collection including other “intermission films” from previous years.
