UnionPay International works with industry partners to provide payments for international visitors to mainland China
Shanghai (OTS) –

More users of international e-wallets supported by UnionPay can now make Weixin QR payments in mainland China

On December 17, UnionPay International announced its new collaboration with Weixin Pay, allowing users of UnionPay international wallets to scan Weixin Pay payment codes in mainland China. Eight wallets can now offer this feature: BoC Pay from Bank of China (Hong Kong), Octopus, PayMe by HSBC and Tap & Go in the Hong Kong SAR, Bangkok Bank Mobile Banking and K PLUS from KASIKORNBANK in Thailand, Naver Pay in South Korea and ICBC Mobile Banking (ICBC Pay) in Malaysia. International visitors will therefore have access to more mobile payment options during their stay in mainland China.

When users link their physical UnionPay cards to participating wallets or activate digital UnionPay cards, they can pay by scanning Weixin Pay payment codes in mainland China, with their home currency automatically converted to RMB. In the future, Weixin will also enable QR payments for additional UnionPay-powered wallets from the Macau Special Administrative Region, other Southeast Asian countries, the South Pacific and other regions.

Since the launch of Project Excellence 2024 in March, UnionPay has actively played its central role as a card system to promote open collaboration with industry partners and facilitate payments for visitors to mainland China. Since June, UnionPay app users have been able to scan the codes of various merchants offering Weixin Pay and make payments. This new connection with international wallets is the latest milestone in UnionPay and Weixin Pay’s collaboration to improve interoperability in payments.

This partnership reflects UnionPay’s commitment to jointly advance connectivity with various payment industry players and accelerate the development of a sustainable business model. It offers international visitors to mainland China more options and better payment processing, further contributing to China’s high-level opening-up. Back in 2018, UnionPay collaborated with Weixin Pay and WeChat Pay HK, an HKD e-wallet, to offer a cross-border payment solution that supports cross-border consumption for Hong Kong residents across more than ten million merchants in mainland China.

In recent years, UnionPay has continued to improve its localized offerings, allowing more and more residents outside mainland China to use the convenient services of UnionPay payment products. Outside mainland China, over 250 million UnionPay cards have been issued in 83 countries and regions, and more than 200 UnionPay-powered wallets have been launched in 36 countries and regions. These products can be used in the global UnionPay acceptance network.
