UnionPay International expands acceptance at European airports and improves payment services for summer travelers

Improved acceptance of UnionPay cards at major European airports

More and more tourists flock to Europe during the summer travel season, and acceptance of UnionPay cards at point-of-sale (POS) terminals in Europe is now over 80%. UnionPay International is making progress in improving the payment experience at major European airports, including airports in France, Germany and Italy. Using UnionPay cards when traveling internationally has become very popular among travelers.

This summer, UnionPay International has made improving the acceptance conditions for UnionPay cards at major European airports a priority. Charles de Gaulle Airport in France, Frankfurt Airport and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the Netherlands are among the top airports where UnionPay card acceptance has significantly improved. Over 80% of merchants at Frankfurt Airport, over 90% of merchants at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and numerous well-known brand stores and duty-free shops at Charles de Gaulle Airport now support UnionPay cards, ensuring a seamless payment experience for travelers.

Convenient and secure payments

Airports are typically the first stop for outbound tourists, and UnionPay strives to provide a safe and convenient payment experience. The world’s major airports now accept UnionPay cards at restaurants, duty-free shops and entertainment venues, allowing travelers to easily pay for meals, gifts and more.

Upon arrival, tourists can withdraw local currency directly from ATMs that accept UnionPay cards, eliminating the need for prior currency exchange. In addition, UnionPay cards or the UnionPay app can be used at tax refund points in airports, enabling easy and quick tax refunds.

UnionPay International’s efforts extend beyond airport services. Over 60 international airline websites as well as popular online travel agencies such as Trip.com, Booking.com and Klook.com now accept UnionPay cards for purchasing airline tickets, making travel planning more convenient for tourists.

Expanding acceptance across Europe

Acceptance of UnionPay cards is increasing rapidly across Europe. Currently, 90% of European countries and regions support UnionPay cards. Popular destinations such as France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Hungary have seen continued improvement in acceptance rates, improving the overall travel experience for UnionPay cardholders. Cardholders benefit from seamless transactions in dining, accommodation, transportation, entertainment and shopping.

To celebrate the summer travel season, UnionPay is offering exclusive discounts for cardholders at six popular European department stores, various shopping centers and gourmet platforms. In France, for example, UnionPay cardholders can receive discounts of up to €166 at renowned stores such as Galeries Lafayette, Printemps and La Samaritaine.

With more than 230 million UnionPay cards issued in 81 countries and regions outside mainland China, UnionPay International is committed to improving the in-store and online payment experience for its cardholders. UnionPay cards are now accepted in 183 countries and regions worldwide, offering cardholders a seamless cross-border payment experience.
