Vienna (OTS/IGGÖ) – With an impressive 98% of the vote, Ümit Vural was re-elected as president in today’s elections of the Islamic Religious Community in Austria (IGGÖ). The overwhelming support reflects the confidence of the Shura Council, the IGGÖ’s legislative body, in his leadership skills and commitment to the community.
Since taking office in 2018, Vural has continuously worked to represent the rights and interests of Muslims in Austria and to promote intra-Muslim diversity and interreligious dialogue.
In his speech, Vural emphasized that he would continue to advocate for the needs of the IGGÖ members and at the same time be open to the concerns of society as a whole. The main focuses of his agenda for the 2023 to 2028 term of office include adapting the Islam law passed in 2021, establishing imam training on Austrian soil and establishing a support network for Muslims who need help in the social area.
In addition to the election of the president and his list of members of the Supreme Council, the board of the Shura Council under its chairman Esad Memić as well as the chairmen of the Islamic religious communities in the federal states and other IGGÖ committees were also elected.
