Vienna/Graz (OTS) –
- Without burdening the municipal budget: öGIG is building digital fiber optic infrastructure
- 10.5 million euros will enable almost 4,800 connections to the Internet of the future
- The neutral öFIBER network from öGIG offers a free choice of internet provider
The course for the digital future was officially set with a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony in Graz: Around 4,800 households and companies in Graz-Waltendorf will now be connected to the high-performance öFIBER fiber optic network of the Austrian Fiber Optic Infrastructure Company (öGIG). This means that citizens will have access to 100 percent real fiber optic Internet and a variety of Internet providers and offers. On that day, both district manager Peter Mayr and öGIG sales manager Christian Nemeth emphasized the importance of the construction project for the district as a place to live and do business.
In our time, a fiber optic infrastructure is currently one of the most important investments for a community in order to position itself well for the future as a location. A strong broadband internet connection is now essential for work and leisure, but also for areas such as education and health. District head of Graz-Waltendorf, Peter Mayr, together with öGIG sales manager Christian Nemeth, officially broke ground for the construction work: “Now it is official. The expansion of our new internet infrastructure can begin. It is a step into a future that will allow us and our next generations full access to the extensive possibilities of digitalization.”
, he points out the sustainable value of the öFIBER fiber optic network for the Graz district.
Turbo on the fiber optic expansion in Styria
A total of around 30 Styrian communities are on the way to the öFIBER network, the high-speed Internet connection from öGIG: around 50,000 households and businesses will soon be able to leave behind outdated copper technologies and start the digital future with confidence. To this end, the Allianz subsidiary will invest around 70 million euros in the Styrian fiber optic expansion in 2024 alone – 10.5 million euros of which will be for Graz-Waltendorf. Christian Nemeth, CCO of öGIG, explains the specific advantages that arise from choosing an öFIBER infrastructure: “The biggest advantage of our open platform is that customers can choose from a wide range of providers and offers when it comes to internet tariffs. Our network not only offers the best technological infrastructure with FTTH, but also a truly neutral platform. This enables unlimited Internet and streaming enjoyment as well as first-class television and IPTV – i.e. television over the Internet. And all in the best quality.”
Here Nemeth primarily points out the customer benefits: “Future-proof open networks and an attractive price-performance ratio guarantee fair competition and are cornerstones of our corporate strategy, which are perceived very positively by customers, as a recent study confirmed.”
Highest internet satisfaction among surveyed öGIG customers
In a current independent customer satisfaction study by the institute marketmind In comparison to conventional technologies such as mobile or landline internet, fiber optic customers gave the best feedback by an impressive margin, especially when it came to the criteria of reliability, speed and future security. What’s particularly pleasing is that FTTH customers are the only ones who would recommend their Internet technology to others.
Project planning and orders
The laying of the öFIBER network in Graz-Waltendorf is being carried out by the partner company REELA Projektentwicklungs- und Bau GmbH, which is already carrying out the fiber optic expansion in Wildon. REELA uses the so-called HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) directional drilling method – a very environmentally friendly alternative to conventional civil engineering methods. The process enables the underground laying of lines, pipes and cables to protect the landscape and the soil and also reduces soil erosion. What is particularly pleasing for residents is that this process causes significantly less noise compared to traditional construction measures. The first households will be connected as early as July and August. Completion of the entire project is scheduled for summer 2026. Interested parties can still secure a connection: An order at special conditions is possible as long as the construction work in the respective construction phase is ongoing.
