Around two years after the start of the war, the situation in Ukraine remains devastating and, despite all efforts, there does not seem to be an end to the fighting in sight. With two theme evenings, numerous documentaries, reports and special programming directly from Ukraine on the anniversary of the start of the war, ARTE illuminates the various aspects of this war of attrition, provides information about current events and takes a look into the future: Putin’s attack has shifted the balance of power worldwide, with threatening ones Consequences for Europe’s stability.
Theme told on Tuesday, February 6th in three documentaries about the complexity of war. Prime time covers “Ukraine: Hunt for war criminals” reveals the responsibility of the Russian state for countless crimes and shows how Putin devised the plan to destroy Ukraine. “The Abducted Children of Ukraine” then observes the search by human rights organizations and families for the children who were abducted to Russia, and “War and Justice” shows the important mission of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, which issued an arrest warrant against Vladimir Putin. The host of the subsequent edition of Tracks East is Anastasia Shestopal, one of many Ukrainians who were scarred externally and internally by the war.
ARTE journalist William Irigoyen presents Topic on Tuesday, February 20th, from Kyiv. Three documentaries are dedicated to the history and current situation in Ukraine. It’s prime time “Blackbox Ukraine – Fight for History” on a search for clues to the key moments in Ukrainian historiography and reveals how one of the bloodiest wars in Europe since 1945 came about. Afterwards throws “Ukraine – war on traitors” a unique look at the role of collaborators in the “grey zones” of Ukraine during the Russian war of aggression and “Hunger as a weapon – Russia’s grain war” works out that wheat is as important a means of pressure for Putin as his armed forces.
Am Saturday February 24thsecond anniversary of the Russian war of aggression, report ARTE reportage and ARTE journal directly from Ukraine. William Irigoyen presents the reports from Maidan Square in Kiev and speaks to representatives of Ukrainian civil society. Also on February 24th, he will host the ARTE Journal live among the residents of the Ukrainian capital, probably from a subway station or in one of the places that
have served as their refuge for two years.
