TV documentary from ORF Vorarlberg: “Carinthians and Styrians – the unpopular immigrants in Vorarlberg back then”

On June 30th at 6:25 p.m. on ORF 2 and on ORF ON

Vienna (OTS) Thousands of Carinthians and Styrians left their homeland and came to Vorarlberg in the 1950s and 1960s. In the “Golden West” they are very welcome in the textile, construction and metal industries as well as in the many craft businesses – but not among the Vorarlberg population. The many men and women from Carinthia and Styria are met with rejection. So they start their own clubs. The familiar customs and specialties from home are upheld there.

Only when the so-called guest workers from Turkey and the former Yugoslavia come to Vorarlberg does the integration of the compatriots from the southern federal states of Austria progress. Decades later, however, the traces of the immigrants are increasingly disappearing. The ORF Vorarlberg TV documentary shows Carinthians and Styrians who immigrated to Vorarlberg. The difficult early days in Austria’s westernmost federal state are still very present today.

“Carinthians and Styrians – the unpopular immigrants in Vorarlberg back then” can be seen on June 30, 2024 at 6:25 p.m. in the “Österreich-Bild” series on ORF 2 and on ORF ON.
