The Lienz / Rauchkofel transmission system ensures the supply of around 65,000 people in Tyrol and Carinthia with radio and TV signals in the highest quality. Since the location can be reached exclusively via an operating cable car from 1968, it has been extensively modernized in recent months in order to continue to ensure smooth operation in the future.
The station location on Rauchkofel near Lienz is one of the most important of the ORS in the state of Tyrol / East Tyrol and supplies large parts of the East Tyrol region, Oberes Drautal and the upper Mölltal with FM radio and digital television. The widespread radio programs include Ö1, Radio Tirol, Radio Kärnten, Ö3 and FM4. Digital antenna television via SimplitV is also spread via the Rauchkofel system. In addition, the location acts as an important infrastructure for mobile and authority radio (BOS).
Investment guarantees TV and radio reception
The transmission system is located at 1,910 meters above sea level in steep terrain in Lienz. The 60 -meter -high transmission mast can only be reached via an operating cable car that has been in use since it was built in 1968. For regular maintenance operations, interference loys and material transport, year -round accessibility is essential for ORS technicians. The location is an important part of the region’s “critical infrastructure”. In order to ensure long -term use, the farm cable car has now been technically brought up to date and guarantees the rapid accessibility of the most important transmission system East Tyrol even in the event of power failures.
Operating cable car renovation for the coming decades
The starting signal for the renewal was in early April 2025. The work was carried out on behalf of the ORS by Frey Austria GmbH. The cable car technology was renewed and the operational safety of the electrical drive was guaranteed. The over 700 meter long train rope and the control of the cable car were also exchanged. The cable car is officially commissioned in July 2025.
“With the modernization of the Rauchkofel farm railway, we, as the Technical subsidiary of the ORF, guarantee that the people in East Tyrol and in the west of Carinthia-also in the event of a disaster-are supplied with radio and TV,” says ORS spokesman Michael Weber.
