Tursky/Karner: A success story: In addition to 500,000 digital driving licenses, 100,000 digital age certificates have already been activated

Vienna (OTS) After the digital driver’s license and the digital student ID, the digital proof of age was the third digital ID card presented on the “ePassports” app: 500,000 digital driver’s licenses and 100,000 digital proof of age have now been activated.

To use it you need the ID-Austria, which comes with 5.12. this year completely replaced the cell phone signature and has already been activated over two million times. In conjunction with the “ePassports” app, the driving license in Austria can also be presented electronically. Its use is already considered a success story: 500,000 activated digital driving licenses have now been achieved on users’ smartphones.

“The digital driving license is, above all, an important contribution to cybersecurity in Austria. This puts another effective stop to the theft of data,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner.

“It was always important to me that digitalization could benefit citizens. We have achieved this with the two digital ID cards and the numbers speak for themselves. Two million ID Austrias, 500,000 digital driving licenses and 100,000 digital proof of age confirm the course. Thanks to ID Austria and the eID platform, the smartphone becomes an ID card. The digital driving license eliminates the hassle of searching and rummaging around for a driving license and proof of age is a simple and quick solution to get into the club when you leave without revealing your personal data,” explained State Secretary for Digitalization Florian Tursky.

Advantages
An active internet connection is not required to use the digital driving license. The police also have a special control app for the practical and unbureaucratic check of ID cards, which has already proven itself well in practice. Since Austria is a pioneer in this case, the digital driving license is currently only recognized in Austria, but is based on the European Union’s eIDAS regulation and should therefore be recognized throughout the EU in the future.

Digital proof of age
Until recently, being able to prove your age using a smartphone was still a utopia. But with the “eIDs” app you can also prove your age in Austria in an electronically certified form. This new authentication is interesting for young people, for example when shopping, borrowing money or entering night-time restaurants. For maximum protection of their own data, the person checking only sees the photo, the time of the last update and whether the required age has been reached. The service has been extremely well received: the digital proof of age on the smartphone has now been activated for the 100,000th time.

Proof of age is available to all people who are registered in Austria and are at least 14 years old via the “ePassport” app. The digital ID is also available offline. Since almost 90 percent of all Austrians aged 15 and over now own a smartphone, a service has been developed for the first time that does not exist in the analog world and with which young people can prove their age digitally and securely.

For the economy, the proof means a simplification and optimization of access processes: The catering industry and in particular its employees receive significant relief when it comes to mandatory age checks in connection with restaurant access and the serving of alcohol, with youth protection being linked to data protection at the same time.

“My goal is to have all the ID cards that are in your wallet also available on your cell phone in the future. Next year we will complete the digital registration certificate and the digital ID card,” Tursky concluded.
