Turnaround in free-range pig farming Hubmann: Approval perhaps from the end of April

On April 4th, Andreas Hubmann will again apply for water law approval for his pig farming ‘in the tent on the field’ – the chances are good

Vienna (OTS) The brothers have been trying for four years Hubmannto get permits for their two pig farms near St. Pölten, each with 500 animals. So far the BH has been stonewalled, criminal proceedings have rained down, and there have already been several threats of eviction. The criminal proceedings are continuing, but discussions with the BH indicate that a new application for approval, which will be submitted on April 4th, has a chance of being approved. This approval would then not be limited in time, although it would be four years BOKU-Projekt is starting, which will examine all the effects of keeping pigs in tents in the field on both the animals and the environment. This could break the dam, allowing numerous other interested parties to start using this form of pig farming.

VGT chairman DDr. Martin Balluch has known the company very well since 2021: “I was very impressed by this form of husbandry from the start. It is a feasible alternative to the fully slatted floor. This is not about classic free-range farming or an organic niche, but rather conventional farming that is also possible on a mass scale. Animal welfare increases in several dimensions and the special bonus: there are no investment costs. All you need is a field, a tent and two fences (against swine fever). Hubmann even has four mother pigs in an enclosure together with their children and the boar. This also seems to work. Breeding should be expanded and also raised to a commercial level. With the current prospect of approval, this form of farming could revolutionize pig farming in Austria. Both companies with fully slatted floors and those with box stalls will then have no excuse. The conversion is practically free and the ongoing effort is absolutely manageable. Even the pig lobby, we hear, is now changing and is interested in this mode of operation. I’m curious to see what excuses there will be as to why we don’t switch to pigs in tents in the fields across the board.”
