Traveling exhibition “hALT – no violence” is touring through Austria

The exhibition addresses the causes and forms of violence against older people

Vienna (OTS) A traveling exhibition on the topic of “violence against older people” is currently touring across Austria. It provides low-threshold information about the various forms of violence in old age and its causes, thereby creating greater awareness among the population. Anyone interested has the opportunity to visit the exhibition until the end of the year. An English version of the traveling exhibition will soon be on display at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. ***

The prevention of violence in old age has been a focus of the work of the Ministry of Social Affairs for years. In order to provide those affected with the best possible support, the anonymous helpline “Violence and Age” was expanded. Those affected receive free advice, information about offers of help and support with case documentation.

In order to create greater awareness of violence against older people, Pro Senectute Austria and the Ministry of Social Affairs have developed an Austria-wide awareness movement. Since the beginning of 2023, it has been traveling through Austria as a traveling exhibition “hALT – no violence”, stopping in many districts and all federal states. More than 4,000 people in over 26 districts in 6 federal states have already visited the exhibition.

In 11 stations, “hALT – no violence” conveys various everyday situations in which violence occurs – partly through videos and interactive exhibition elements. Additional texts are intended to give visitors an understanding of the background to violence. Physical, psychological and financial violence are discussed. The types of violence are also divided into places where older people experience violence, such as their own homes, public spaces and institutions such as old people’s and nursing homes.

“Violence is never acceptable, no matter what age it occurs. Violence against older people in particular remains a taboo topic. In addition to suitable support offers, there needs to be greater awareness in our society,” emphasizes Social Affairs Minister Johannes Rauch. “That is the aim of the traveling exhibition: it promotes external and self-reflection, but at the same time also provides information about prevention measures and offers of help for those affected.”
