Travel through Lower Austria with top-class masterpieces in the Lower Austria State Gallery

Krems (OTS) In the new collection presentation “On the Road. “Journey to the Collection” in the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich, visitors meet masters of Austrian art history. Artists like Tina Blau-Lang, Friedrich Gauermann, Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele invite you on a special journey through Lower Austria.

“Lower Austria is a discovery! In the new exhibition we invite visitors on a journey through Lower Austria and provide an insight into the wealth of the Lower Austrian state collections,” is glad Gerda Ridlerartistic director of the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich and curator of the exhibition.

“Landscapes had a great influence on artists. Conversely, artists have had a lasting impact on places. We tell the story of this exciting interplay using selected regions in Lower Austria.” emphasized Nicholas Scratchhead of the art collections of Lower Austria and curator of the exhibition.

Travel through Lower Austria

The collection presentation takes visitors on a journey through Lower Austria. Many artists have valued and shaped the country over the centuries. They painted or drew in nature and captured everyday motifs in genre paintings and portraits. They created landscape and devotional images, without which we would know far less about life in Lower Austria today. The show takes visitors to six places or regions in Lower Austria that were the birthplaces or places of work of important Austrian artists. From the area around Plankenberg Castle to the picturesque backdrop of the Wachau and the charming Piestingtal, visitors follow in the footsteps of artists who were inspired by landscapes and captured their impressions on canvas for posterity.

Masterpieces of Austrian art history

All works come from the art collections of the state of Lower Austria and were created by world-famous artists from Austria such as Tina Blau-Lang, Marie Egner, Oskar Kokoschka, and Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller. One of the masterpieces of Austrian atmospheric impressionism is Emil Jakob Schindler’s “Poplar Avenue after the Thunderstorm” from 1892. Friedrich Gauermann, the most important Austrian animal painter of the Biedermeier period, is represented. His painting “Deer Pursued by a Lynx” (1831) is shown. An absolute highlight of the exhibition is the monumental, eight meter long “Panorama of the Danube Valley with the Dürnstein Ruins” (1906) by Anton Hlavacek. “The Adoration of the Shepherds” (1780) by Martin Johann Schmidt exemplifies Schmidt’s mastery of baroque painting. One of the most valuable works of art in the exhibition is Egon Schiele’s “Disintegrating Mill” from 1916.
