“The security work is on the home stretch. We are close to completion in the upper demolition area. The workers are doing their best to secure the rock face,” informs Lower Austria’s Transport Councilor LH deputy Udo Landbauer about the progress of the work on the rock slide north of Aggsbach Dorf on the B 33 state road.
There is now a concrete timetable for the opening to traffic. “We will be able to open the road much earlier than originally expected. Extending working hours to seven days a week is very effective. This made it possible to significantly shorten the time it took to create the technical security measures. “That was the only way to make faster progress,” emphasizes Landbauer. An increase in the number of people working in the rock was and is not possible due to occupational safety.
By the beginning of December, 100 percent of the rock nails had been moved as a preparatory measure for connecting the demolition area. In total there were more than 200 rock nails, 75 percent more than originally planned. In addition, all grouted anchors including supports were drilled and installed. The rock networking was completed by December 8th. On December 13th, the 125 cubic meter block in the rock face was finally blown up. Emulsion explosives with a total size of around 20 kilos were used as explosives. The blasted rock material will be cleared using a walking excavator from December 16th.
“This means that all security measures in the upper area will be completed before Christmas. The next measures are to clear the loose material amounting to around 900 cubic meters and install the rope barrier to ensure work safety. “The large cone of rubble can then be cleared and the rockfall protection system can be installed in the lower area and the clearing work on the road can begin,” says Landbauer, explaining the next steps.
“We will be able to open this important traffic artery before Easter. This provides clarity and planning security for the entire region. Our business and tourism businesses can get off to a flying start again,” said Landbauer.
