Total failures of the power supply in Southwest Europe show that power grids reach borders

The blackout occurs when there is too much or too little electricity on the net. It is worrying that you do not know why the network collapsed on April 28 in Spain, Portugal and parts of Southwest France. The dramatic consequences are known: millions of people without light and electricity, stuck lifts, stuck travelers, traffic chaos due to unusual traffic lights, no cash in ATMs, supermarket coffers out of operation, powerless mobile phones.

“Thank God the matter was still lightly off because the emergency power supply in the hospitals worked,” Jürgen Roth, head of the Austrian Efuel Alliance, is facilitated. “But now the right conclusions have to be drawn, because the power grid is increasingly under stress, and you will not always get away with a blue eye. The economic damage is enormous if production processes are stopped abruptly, and not just the goods that are processed, but the systems themselves are damaged.”

More emergency flow through climate -neutral fuel

“All vital functions must be secured with emergency power supply, this is the first apprenticeship from the almost disaster. Emergency stream must be available in sufficient quantities and must not only be designed for short interruptions. It is clear that Efuels should be used in the generators,” demands the energy expert.

Second, the electricity system must not be overloaded without reflection by more and more consumer groups. Jürgen Roth: “Now the passengers were glad that the urban buses were able to drive thanks to their combustion engine, while lanes and e-buses stand. Replacement of heating with heat pumps, Switch from natural gas to electricity in industry and switch to electric cars faster than the capacities of the suppliers grow, provokes supply bottlenecks.”

Supply also starts with Brownout

If all cars and trucks only drive electrically, the deficiency report will be reached faster and more often in the future. Before the worst case, the dreaded blackout occurs, the network operators switch off certain consumer groups such as electricity filling stations. These “planned” switching off also deprives people for their urgent mobility needs without long warning.

The first alarm sign is that electricity suddenly becomes very expensive: there were several weeks in Austria and in Germany this winter in which hydropower weakened because the rivers led little water, high fog was prevented solar power generation and the wind was missing from the wind turbines.

It is just as problematic if too much electricity is fed into the network. The network collapses like a cascade if the electricity cannot drain off.

Provide the emergency current with efuels in a climate -neutral manner

Jürgen Roth: “In order to ensure the safety of supplying the buildings with heat, the vehicles with drive energy and industry with process energy, several energy sources have to work together. For example, a hybrid car can drive with ufuels when the electrical car is waiting for it, until there is a charging current again.”

Jürgen Roth appeals to politics to initiate emergency power supply of all strategic nodes with climate -neutral energy sources (especially efuels).

“Efuels don’t take anything away from the tight domestic generation of electricity because they are generated where there are no or few consumers, for example on coasts or in deserts. Therefore they are a cornerstone of a resilient energy supply,” said Jürgen Roth in conclusion.
