Vienna (OTS) – Christoph Feurstein will present the following contributions in “Thema” on Monday, December 11, 2023, at 9:10 p.m. on ORF 2:
Winter heroes – Alpine police and electricity technicians on duty
“When so many people are without electricity, not a single person complains about having to work in snow and icy conditions,” says Harald Kraudinger, operations manager of the Upper Styria energy supply. Recently, 20,000 households there were without electricity because of a fallen power pole. In a 28-hour effort, the employees managed to put the power pole back up. The first avalanche deaths of this winter have also been reported. Last year there were 46 deaths while skiing or ski touring in Austria. Christian Leitner is the only survivor of an avalanche accident on the north face of the Ötscher that cost three people their lives. “Anyone who loves the mountains decides to take on a residual risk.” A “topic” report by Andrea Poschmaier and Leon Hoffmann-Ostenhof.
Child poverty in Austria
They also exist in Austria: children who come to school hungry in the morning. 353,000 children and young people are at risk of poverty or exclusion. One of them is Petra B’s son. “I know that I would give my son everything if I could,” says the single mother. After deducting the fixed costs, you have 100 euros left per month for groceries. In Carinthian elementary schools, Volkshilfe has now opened the so-called Breakfast Club, where children can have breakfast before classes start. Caritas offers tutoring in 68 learning cafés throughout Austria for children whose parents cannot afford it. Oliver Rubenthaler and Savanka Schwarz researched “Theme”.
Abuse of power in the music business
“I saw the bill and I had a nervous breakdown,” says pop musician Anne Eck. After a conflict with her music producer, he demanded the existence-threatening sum of 320,000 euros from her. He was not only their producer, but also president of the largest Austrian association that advocates for the rights of composers. Anne Eck goes to court. Result: The invoice was issued incorrectly. But musicians in Austria rarely have the courage to speak out against injustice. What power imbalances exist in the Austrian music industry? “Theme” meets the musicians Yasmo, Thomas Rabitsch and Law Wallner, who are trying to change structures. A report by Pia Bichara.
