To sell the Tyrolean mountains

To sell the Tyrolean mountains

On the occasion of the tag called by #aufstehn and the Feldring Citizens ‘Initiative to protect the Alps, the Alpine -wide network Protect Alpine Nature (PAN) and the Feldring Citizens’ Initiative invite you to the press conference in Innsbruck. The focus is on the increasing conflict between nature conservation and tourist use in the Tyrolean Alps. Representatives of environmental organizations, citizens’ initiatives and alpine associations sound an alarm: The pressure on the last untouched natural spaces grows – through tourism projects, power plant expansion and lack of political courage to limit it. The press conference brings together experts from all over the Alpine region – with clear demands for the protection of alpine landscapes and an appeal to set the course for future -proof use.

The member organizations of the Protect Alpine Nature network include #aufstehn and the Feldring Citizens’ Initiative, initiator of a cross -border petition on my. Aufstehn.at with over 100,000 signatures, also 13 other organizations from Germany, Austria and Italy. Together they are calling for comprehensive protective measures for the sensitive and threatened glacier and mountain landscapes of the Alpine region.

Statements of the PK speakers:

Philipp Tchaikner, Pan: “Pan – Protect Alpine Nature is a cross -border network of currently 15 environmental organizations, citizens’ initiatives and NGOs from the Alpine region. We have merged because the pressure on the last untouched natural landscapes in the Alps is growing steadily – and we want to counter this development together. To protect the Alps, we should be a visible sign of our joint, border commitment.”

Gerd Estermann, BI Feldring: “The tourism industry in Tyrol has used a lot of original landscape in the past. Another expansion is neither beneficial for nature nor the local population.”

Clemens Matt, Austrian Alpine Association: “In view of the climate crisis, the courage to set clear limits – and to take the will, sustainable paths. When is the end of the development of natural areas? When is our hunger for energy breastfeeding? It is time to say stopping that will risk our last natural freedom.”

Lena Öller, press spokeswoman, Pow AT: “Austria not only lives as a tourism destination from an intact mountain and natural landscape. In order to ensure that our basics for agriculture, economy, local recreation and various sports, ambitious environmental and climate protection are now essential- and larger interventions are simply no longer justifiable.”

Harald Putz, director of the film “Requiem in White”: “I dealt intensively with the melting of the glacier, shot at 14 glaciers of the Eastern Alps and spoke to many experts from the most different areas. In the documentary Requiem in white, I reflect on my own past in tourism and professional sport and try to put my changed awareness in the context of man -made climate change.”

Maximilian Frey, WWF Austria: “Tyrol’s last Alpine jewels have to be preserved. Therefore, there must be no expansion of the Kaunertal power plant, which is neither safe nor environmentally friendly. It is a danger to the affected population and the unique nature. The Platzertal must be preserved and the destructive expansion project is stopped.”

Following the statements, there is the possibility for questions and background calls.
